WhatsApp is powerful for customer communication, but falls under GDPR. With a few simple principles you're all set.

Consent (opt-in)

For proactively contacting customers (campaigns, notifications) you need a legal basis — usually consent. Responding to customers who message you first is always allowed; that's service.

Opt-out (STOP)

Always offer a way to unsubscribe with outbound messages (for example "reply STOP"). Put anyone who unsubscribes on a suppression list and don't contact them again. Respect that automatically.

Store, view & delete

  • Don't keep longer than necessary; set a reasonable retention period
  • Customers have the right to access, export and delete their data
  • Process data on secure servers, with a clear legal basis
Do you work with a service provider who processes your conversations? Record that in a processor agreement — that's standard with a proper WhatsApp solution.
